Online Slots Basics
Introduction and history of slot machines
The original gambling machine, and precursor to the modern slot machine, has its origins in 19th Century America. It contained five drums holding a total of 50 card faces and was based on poker. There was no direct payout mechanism, so prizes for a good hand were paid in free drinks, cigars, or even beer, depending on what was available at the host establishment. It was not long after, that Charles Fey invented the classic three-reel slot machine, known as the ‘Liberty Bell’.
Today, this version is still the most popular but is more commonly a computerised version and not the original ‘one-armed bandit’ style of machine with a lever on the side of the machine. There are literally hundred’s of types of variations of slots available to play, whether it's a classic slot or a progressive machine with a jackpot.
Online Slots Basics
Slot machines are essentially games of chance. Slot machines have reels/wheels that spin and stop to display a row of symbols. If a player matches a combination of symbols according to the rules of the game, then the slot machine pays the player cash or some other sort of value, such as extra games.
The payout amount is dependant upon the winning combination the reels have formed. Symbols are chosen at random by the software programme using a Random Number Generator system or RNG. The RNG randomly selects several hundred symbols and numbers every second. Every random number controls a specific reel and symbol combination that is randomly selected once a credit is played.
